Abstract:
During the third decade of the 20th century two remarkable archaeological disc-overies in Egypt provided the first tangible evidence of the form of wooden furniture used by the rulers of this ancient civilization. Although, these armc-hairs display similar physical characteristics, in that they raise the seat to a comfortable height, provide a back panel and arm panels, the manner of their design and construction differ considerably. It is these differences that will be examined in this paper to show how advances in design thinking and methods of construction could potentially improve the quality of armchairs, the principles of which are still seen in modern forms of seating.
